Biography
With his tall, masculine looks and dimpled charm, he quickly landed a role in the feature film “Blackrock” (1997), a gripping fictionalization of the rape and murder of a teenage girl in a surf community. Ledger’s auspicious film debut led to a recurring role as Australian TV’s first gay character, cyclist Snowy Bowles in the drama “Sweat,” which was set at an elite training academy for young athletes. His career snowballed with a solid run of guest work on Australian TV series “Ship to Shore,” “Bush Patrol,” and “Home and Away” before he was tapped for American television as the star of “Roar” (Fox, 1997). In the medieval-set adventure, Ledger played a teenaged Celtic prince who becomes the leader of his people when Romans murder his family. With a job description that included bellowing a mighty roar before beating the baddies, in addition to dealing with his inner turmoil, Ledger proved an impressive recruit and was well loved by the series’ cult audience. In 1999, Ledger starred in the crime thriller “Two Hands” (1998) from Australian director Gregor Jordan and earned a Best Actor nomination from the AFI Film Festival, where both the film and director earned top awards. Despite the independent accolades, Ledger earned considerably more attention for the American teen comedy, “10 Things I Hate About You” (1999). In this modern retooling of “The Taming of the Shrew,” he starred as a moody student with a reputed criminal past who is enlisted to woo Julia Stiles. A teen heartthrob was born and now moviegoers on both sides of the pond were smitten.
Not surprisingly, the newcomer was barraged with Hollywood offers to repeat his onscreen success in a multitude of cookie cutter teen romantic comedies, but Ledger waited out the deluge until he found a vehicle that would show audiences another side of his talent. That opportunity was realized when Ledger played Mel Gibson’s son in the much-heralded “The Patriot” (2000), a Revolutionary War saga about a pacifist (Gibson) forced to choose sides after his soldier son is captured by the enemy. Following the flurry of magazine covers and articles, the in-demand actor starred as medieval swashbuckler in a film set to arena rock standards in “A Knight’s Tale” (2001) – with the tagline “He Will Rock You” reportedly embarrassing the young actor, who worried about the pressures of such a promise.
Determined to take another route than that predetermined by his rugged, blonde good looks, Ledger impressively held his own opposite Billy Bob Thorton as the anguished of a cold-hearted prison guard who kills himself in “Monster’s Ball” (2001). He signed on opposite Kate Hudson to headline the Victorian military drama “Four Feathers” (2002), directed by Shekhar Kapur, but the film made nary a ripple at the box office. Commencing a high-profile and long-time romance with actress and fellow Aussie, Naomi Watts – ten years his senior – Ledger became a favorite subject of the paparazzi and entertainment media, particularly in the couple’s homeland. As his public profile rose, he sought to shore up his professional reputation with a portrayal of a renegade priest who runs afoul of an ancient and evil sect operating within the church in “The Order” (2003).
Ledger again earned favor with AFI Festival critics for “Ned Kelly” (2004), playing a good man driven to striking back at a corrupt British colonial system in 19th century Australia, after serving a prison term on trumped-up charges. Despite AFI recognition and a cast that included Orlando Bloom, Geoffrey Rush and Naomi Watts, “Ned Kelly” was released by Universal into less than 20 theaters. Ledger’s next appearance was in “Lords of Dogtown” (2005), a fictionalized rags-to-riches tale of the Southern California figures who revolutionized skateboarding and propelled themselves into wanton celebrity. Ledger was virtually unrecognizable as Skip Engblom, who owns a surf shop and forms the skaters into the celebrated Zephyr Skateboard Team. Exploring still new territory, the hungry up-and-comer teamed with Matt Damon to play fictionalized versions of the famed Bavarian fairy tale spinners “The Brothers Grimm” (2005), reimagined by director Terry Gilliam as a pair of curse-removing con artists who are suddenly tasked with solving a genuine magical mystery that ultimately inspires many of their famous stories.
The unfortunate misfire was soon forgotten, however, in the face of his following project — director Ang Lee’s adaptation of the E. Annie Proulx’s story “Brokeback Mountain.” In the finest performance of his short career, Ledger played Ennis Del Mar, a stoic, rough-around-the-edges ranch hand who unwittingly finds himself in a sexual relationship with a fellow cowboy (Jake Gyllenhaal) while on a lengthy and remote sheep drive. Adding to his character’s torment, the couple continues their complex relationship for the next 20 years, despite both getting married – with Ennis marrying Alma (Michelle Williams) and starting a family. Ledger’s quiet, haunting, convincingly tortured performance was such a revelation, he was honored with a slew of nominations, including Oscar and Golden Globe Awards for Best Actor. By the time the film hit theaters, Watts and Ledger had broken up and he was dating his on-screen wife Williams, previously best known for her work on “Dawson’s Creek” (WB, 1998-2003). The two had a daughter, Matilda Rose, on Oct. 28, 2005, and were often photographed in the midst of a remarkably normal looking life in a Brooklyn neighborhood.
Ledger’s final 2005 film, “Casanova,” was director Lasse Hallstrom’s fictionalized account of the legendary lothario. It was easily one of the most disappointing films of the year, despite lavish production values and game performances by Ledger and the all-star cast. He bounced back with “I’m Not There” (2007), playing the “egomaniac superstar” incarnation of Bob Dylan in Todd Haynes’ unique character study of the iconic singer. Ledger and Williams got some unwelcome ink after their breakup that year, but Ledger rebounded with news that he appear as the legendary comic book villain, The Joker, opposite Christian Bale’s Batman in “The Dark Knight” (2008); the second film in director Christopher Nolan’s popular revival of the Caped Crusader’s film franchise. But before the “Dark Knight” was released, tragedy struck on Jan. 22, 2008, when Ledger was found dead in his Manhattan apartment. Authorities were called and arrived on scene, discovering no apparent foul play but numerous pills nearby and declared his body in “full cardiac arrest” upon their arrival. At the same time the actor’s body was being prepared for burial in Perth, Australia, the Chief Medical Examiner for the City of New York concluded in his report – based on the toxicology findings – that Ledger had suffered an “accidental overdose” by the combined effects of oxycodone (Oxycontin), hydrocodone (Vicodin), diazepam (Valium), temazepam (Restoril, i.e. sedative), alprazolam (Xanax), and doxylamine (i.e. sleep aid).

I have been looking forward to it for so long & I wasn’t disappointed. Heath Ledger became the Joker…man, he was awesome. I was very sad at the same time as I was excited , of course, just like everyone else, knowing that this role is Heath’s very last completed role.I admired him so as an actor and even more so now. He shows his acting skill more than ever, in this film.
I only wish there could be more….

Anyone can do a role of a Joker from here-on but whether anyone should take this role will depend on howmuch he can postulate the overimposing and legendary role played Heath Ledger. My tributes and best wishes to the cinematic academy for giving the world the best negative character of the 21st century even before it has completed its first decade.

Posted: Jul 20th, 2008 at 8:12 pm3Reply to this comment. It’s been 36 hours since I’ve seen this film they call “The Dark Knight” and I still sit here in disbelief and amazement. Heath’s portrayal of the The Joker might be the best perfomance I have ever witnessed and definately made this movie. His performances are just so inspiring that it breaks my heart that he’s not with us anymore. But there is this small hope that I still have that his death was fake. I know it’s sick to think about but I believe Heath would have done it for the right reasons. Too get away from all the media and cameras too just be with his family and little girl. It would be a horrible thing to do to his loving fans but I think he would return and all would be forgiven. Of course that is a very slim possibilty but one can only hope. Sorry if I offend anybody with this statement.

Watching him in “The Dark Knight” I was just totally amazed and speechless, but I was also very sad knowing that he wouldn’t be here to see how wonderful he did. I’m still very very heartbroken about his death and I don’t want to believe it. I’ve seen about 6 of his movies and I’m going to try to see them all now. My prayers and condolences are with Michelle, Matilda, and the rest of his family and friends.

I was confused towards the end because he hadn’t appeared any more but then remembered that he had died during filming. The movie was amazing and I will be disappointed if he does not at least become nominated for an Oscar.

Posted: Jul 23rd, 2008 at 4:35 am11Reply to this comment. What a fantastic movie! It is just surreal that he will not be in the next one to continue that character. He brought so much depth and darkness into that role and made the Joker so creepy that the movie should have been called, ‘The Joker’.
What an incredible tragedy for all of us to have lost such a talented individual who had his whole life ahead of him. -

He was incredibly talented, and I can’t believe he was taken away so young. He was an amazing actor and from what I’ve seen and heard an incredibly passionate, and dedicated person. He will be missed.

And it was hard concentrating on “the dark knight” when you think about the tragedy. His acting in the movie was fabulous. In fact, He was the reason i saw it. And seeing his charector and how he pertrade it was pure genious. I’m very scared to see who they’ll get for the next movie. Someone has to and there’s a slim chance that someone can take his place let alone be better.

As much as i love heath i strongly disagree. With how big of a fan i am, can see where you coming from, but the writers of the movie kept everything as close to the comic as they could and one of those things was to keep the title the same (”The Dark Knight”).
Also, Just because heath died doesn’t mean he should get so much done for him. On the dvd they’re going to do more for him but it really was so last minute.
So i do understand. Not that i hate the idea, i do like it, but there are reasons why they didn’t do that. But in the end he did get something. He was a person and he probably had his funeral. but giving him the title is taking it too far.

Posted: Jul 25th, 2008 at 6:50 am20Reply to this comment. To be perfectly honest I never really followed Heath’s carer. So I never knew whether or not I loved him. Sure he was great in Brokeback Mountain. I was upset when he died because he was so young. But I never knew… until I saw this movie. It was incredible. When the movie ended my heart was beating so fast and I had a lump in my throat. I wished he was still here to see how amazing he has done. I wish he was still here so I could now follow his carer. He was perfect, deep, haunting, comical. Genius. He has to win that Oscar. I don’t care if it’s unethical in any way. It’s right and he deserves it.

He brought true emotional feelings to the film through Brokeback and Knight.
He definitely deserves an Oscar for his performance in the Dark Knight as the Joker. Absoultely mind-blowing from beginning to end in that film.
From fan who has watched your films I will be waiting for the award you must rightly deserve!

Posted: Jul 26th, 2008 at 8:40 pm27Reply to this comment. This movie was cursed. The joke was on him, unfortunately, for doing this role. Jack Nicholson even said he ‘warned him’. This was a bad joke. Play the joker (well enough) and you get played. Maybe superstitious? Maybe. Maybe not. What I do know now is that the stakes are getting too high in this acting biusness for some of these actors’ own good. Now, about Heath’s ‘performance’, in particular. What nobody has said yet is that Heath’s done for acting what Marlon brando did for it in the 1960’s. Marlon Brando took acting to another level by making it seem more natural and more real. At the time, acting technique was more ‘canned’ and had a more ’staged’ feeling to it. Ever since then, we’ve thought acting has been phenomenal, because actors had caught on and learned how to perform in that way- that Marlon Brando pioneered. Now… well, we are all in a mix here. We are still in the middle of a storm because of Heath Ledger and what he did with the Joker. People don’t realize it yet- maybe some of you do- but Heath did something that alot of people- I know I have- have been waiting for, for a long time: he took contempory, modern, great acting TO EVEN ANOTHER LEVEL. To some, he did the unthinkable. He revolutionized acting, again, in the same way that Brando did for and in his time. And he did it in a shorter amount of time. Most of it seems to be compressed into even a single role, that of the Joker. That’s the difference. Like the Denver post said, it would be a huge injustice if he didn’t recieve an Oscar for this last movie. Of course he will get it, though. Everybody just seems to know this already, and how funny. Already, and the movie hasn’t been out but for a week. What more can you say? acting has been revolutionized, reenergized and renewed forever. It will just be a matter of time before all other actors catch on.

Posted: Jul 30th, 2008 at 9:20 pm37Reply to this comment. What a sad thing to see a man with his life ahead of him, and so much to live for die. I remember the news and media trying to snap photos as the paramedics whelled him into the ambulance. It was a sight that I will never forget. It was a sight that I wish I could forget. I was upset that people cared only to snap photos than to respect and mourn him. I wish I could’ve been just someone he knew, so that he didn’t feel like he needed prescription meds to help him sleep. I would’ve offered him my ear just to listen to his troubles. I think what could have possibly been troubling him??? Then I see him acting in that movie, and I feel that he put so much of his heart into it. I feel that maybe it was almost a good way for him to unleash any anger he was feeling due to his separation to his wife or to the break up of his home and family. I don’t know. I do know… that he is one of the best actors of our time. I know that the movie “The Dark Knight” was practically nothing without his performace. His character came to life, and was more than just a script or a joker smile. I think many people felt like me and were rooting for the villain more this time. If you never knew who he was I am sure this movie would’ve made you want to know who he was. It hurts to think that we will never see his face on the big screen again. For nights after seeing the news I was in disbelief, and now after seeing the movie at night I wake up in disbelief still. If it is hard for us as fans I can only imagine for his family and closest friends. I read all the comments fans have left here, and I feel better that I am not the only one feeling the loss. I am glad people remember him, and I am sure that to him that is recognition enough. I say it with conviction… Heath will win the Oscar. He deserves it, and it is known. I pray for his soul, and for his family. Rest in Peace Heath…

Rest in Peace Heath…
i totally feel the same exact way i wish i couldve known him too;;and i was totally rootin for the villian this time he was sexy in a wierd way;; i heard and kno that he is one the nicest people he was just rrele unlucky to have this severe insomnia, and it is completely unfair that he died bcuz of it i mean like what did he ever do to deserve such a thing and he was so young too!!!!!!!!!! FUKK…….WHY?? >=.[
srry i am just rele pissed that he is gone and i actually have been crying multiple times 2nite bcuz of him god i am sad over someone i never even knew personally strange uh? but that is how i feel cant change it…
with all my love to Heath -

When he was alive, its sad to say i wasn’t a huge fan. I didn’t see enough of him, but his performance in brokeback mountain made me cry everytime and the beauty behind the role he played.
I was terribly in love with his character in 10 things i hate about you and i admire his character in the dark knight strongly.
I just wish, with all my heart he was here now, so instead of feeling sad and dissapointed everytime i see a film with him in, i want to feel “wow what next heath?”
It’s a modern day tragedy, i can only now hope he wins the oscar he deserves.
Keep up the good work with the website everyone.R.I.P Heath.
I miss your grin and awkwurd disposition off camera and your amazing performance on already: (

Posted: Aug 1st, 2008 at 10:27 pm47Reply to this comment. At first, I didn’t really like Heath’s work. That was until I saw him in `The Order/The Sin Eater` He showed me in this film that he really was an extremely gifted and talented actor but portraying such a realistic priest who has struggled with his faith. Since then, Heath Ledger showed that he could take on challenging roles such as his performance in Brokeback Mountain.
I recently went along to see him in The Dark Knight and I expected him to portray the Joker in a certain way. He did not do this, he failed in my expectations. This may seem a little harsh, but not so! he destroyed my vision and expectation and replaced them with something that was extra-ordinary. He transcended any known concept or idea of this character and forged a character so cruel and cunning that far surpassed any other portrayal including that of the great Jack Nicholson.
Anyone who can take a known concept and replace that with something original should be recognised by the Academy, and it is on this fact that he should be nominated and win in next years Oscar ceremony.
My thoughts and prayers go out to his family, his daughter Matilda, Michelle Williams and all of his friends.
By looking at how many people have written about their sorrow and loss including my own about the loss of Heath Ledger plainly shows how much he will be remembered and never be forgotten.
`Truth is Beauty, Beauty is Truth` Keats
His phrase was discussed by Heath’s character Alex in the film `The Others/The Sin Eater` and with this in mind, Heath’s acting, his life, his work was all so beautiful, so therefore it is a Truth to behold. -

It states that the movie “CASANOVA” was disappointing! I have to totally disagree. If you haven’t seen it, SEE IT! It is hilarious and he just makes me laugh and laugh….He is an awesome actor and made the movie worth seeing. To me it was like mixing Princess Bride, Shakespear in Love and a little of Moulan Rouge all together. It was great!

Heath’s performance was spine chilling, hardly believed it was him beneath the make up, that voice! Just sublime. Three things made that movie, Heath, Morgan Freeman and Michael Caine, who both supplied quiet dignity to an action packed fabulous movie! Sad that he left us so young. He would have gone on to great things.

I admired him so as an actor and even more so now. He shows his acting skill more than ever, in this film.

Its like he was born yesterday morning, grew up in Australia, participated in movies/theaters; in the afternoon, he appeared on Brokeback Mountain (which made him a best actor); & 2day mornin’, he marries his co-star Michelle, had a beautiful daughter Matilda, got into a divorce & this afternoon, he appears on the best movie, dark knight (which ‘will’ make him gain an Oscars nomination)… but suddenly: he disappears. Without no1 knowing where he went… “its like he left the world, without saying goodbye…”
