Born: 4 April 1979
Where: Perth, Australia
Height: 6′ 1″
Died: 22 January 2008 New York City, USA

heath-ledger-071He was born Heath Andrew Ledger on the 4th of April, 1979, at the Subiaco Hospital in Perth, Western Australia. The Ledger name was well-known in Perth, the family having run a foundry that provided much of the raw material for the famous Perth to Kalgoorlie Pipeline, which ran 557 kilometres east out into the desert and, beginning to pump back in 1903, first supplied the Western Australian goldfields and now served over 100,000 people and 6 million sheep in 44,000 square miles. The Sir Frank Ledger Charitable Trust, named after Heath’s great-grandfather, was renowned for granting funds to the area’s universities, paying for visiting lecturers and scholarships for gifted students.

In keeping with the family tradition, Heath’s father Kim, a racing enthusiast, ran several engineering firms in the city, while Heath’s mother, Sally, hailing from the Scottish Campbell clan, was a French teacher. High romantics, they named their son after Emily Bronte’s Heathcliff having some four years earlier called their first-born daughter Catherine (she’d be known as Kate). There would be two more half-sisters, Olivia and Ashleigh, born to Kim and Sally respectively once they had separated. This would happen when Heath was 10. By then he’d already enrolled at the Guildford Grammar School, an all-boy academy set on 100 glorious hectares of undulating land beside the Swan river, some 15 kilometres to the north-east of the city. For 10 years this would be the seat of Heath’s education. Dedicated to “the growth and freedom of young minds and bodies”, it had vast playing fields, horse riding facilities and even its own farm. Students could go rowing on the river or test themselves in an Olympic-sized swimming pool. The choir sang in the Chapel of St Mary and St George, one of the finest and most imposing examples of gothic architecture in Australia.

Ledger’s older sister, Kate, an actress and later a publicist, with whom he was very close, inspired his acting on stage, and his love of Gene Kelly inspired his successful choreography leading to Guildford Grammar’s 60-member team’s “first all-boy victory” at the Rock Eisteddfod Challenge. Heath’s and Kate’s other siblings include two half-sisters, Ashleigh Bell , his mother’s daughter with her second husband and his stepfather Roger Bell, and Olivia Ledger), his father’s daughter with second wife and his stepmother Emma Brown.

Ledger was an avid chess player, winning Western Australia’s junior chess championship at the age of 10. As an adult, he often played with other chess enthusiasts at Washington Square Park. Allan Scott’s film adaptation of the chess-related 1983 novel The Queen’s Gambit, by Walter Tevis, which at the time of his death he was planning both to perform in and to direct, would have been Ledger’s first feature film as a director.

Among his most-notable romantic relationships, Ledger dated actress Heather Graham for several months in 2000 to 2001, and he had a serious on-and-off-again long-term relationship with actress Naomi Watts, whom he met during the filming of Ned Kelly and with whom he lived at times from 2002 to 2004. In the summer of 2004, he met and began dating actress Michelle Williams on the set of Brokeback Mountain, and their daughter, Matilda Rose, was born on 28 October 2005 in New York City. Matilda Rose’s godparents are Ledger’s Brokeback co-star Jake Gyllenhaal and Williams’ Dawson’s Creek castmate Busy Philipps. Problems with paparazzi in Australia prompted Ledger to sell his residence in Bronte, New South Wales and move to the United States, where he shared an apartment with Williams, in Boerum Hill, Brooklyn, from 2005 to 2007. In September 2007, Williams’ father, Larry Williams, confirmed to Sydney’s Daily Telegraph that Ledger and Williams had ended their relationship. After his break up with Williams, in late 2007 and early 2008, the tabloid press and other public media linked Ledger romantically with supermodels Helena Christensen and Gemma Ward and with former child star, actress Mary-Kate Olsen.

I saw The Dark knight today….
I have been looking forward to it for so long & I wasn’t disappointed. Heath Ledger became the Joker…man, he was awesome. I was very sad at the same time as I was excited , of course, just like everyone else, knowing that this role is Heath’s very last completed role.

I admired him so as an actor and even more so now. He shows his acting skill more than ever, in this film.

I only wish there could be more….

The masterpiece from an actor who redefined terror. A showcase of superlative talent and histrionics. Anyone can do a role of a Joker from here-on but whether anyone should take this role will depend on howmuch he can postulate the overimposing and legendary role played Heath Ledger. My tributes and best wishes to the cinematic academy for giving the world the best negative character of the 21st century even before it has completed its first decade.

It’s been 36 hours since I’ve seen this film they call “The Dark Knight” and I still sit here in disbelief and amazement. Heath’s portrayal of the The Joker might be the best perfomance I have ever witnessed and definately made this movie. His performances are just so inspiring that it breaks my heart that he’s not with us anymore. But there is this small hope that I still have that his death was fake. I know it’s sick to think about but I believe Heath would have done it for the right reasons. Too get away from all the media and cameras too just be with his family and little girl. It would be a horrible thing to do to his loving fans but I think he would return and all would be forgiven. Of course that is a very slim possibilty but one can only hope. Sorry if I offend anybody with this statement.

Heath Ledger was definatley one of the best actors of all time. Watching him in “The Dark Knight” I was just totally amazed and speechless, but I was also very sad knowing that he wouldn’t be here to see how wonderful he did. I’m still very very heartbroken about his death and I don’t want to believe it. I’ve seen about 6 of his movies and I’m going to try to see them all now. My prayers and condolences are with Michelle, Matilda, and the rest of his family and friends.

I saw The Dark Knight recently and was very pleased by Heath’s performance. I was confused towards the end because he hadn’t appeared any more but then remembered that he had died during filming. The movie was amazing and I will be disappointed if he does not at least become nominated for an Oscar.

What a fantastic movie! It is just surreal that he will not be in the next one to continue that character. He brought so much depth and darkness into that role and made the Joker so creepy that the movie should have been called, ‘The Joker’.
What an incredible tragedy for all of us to have lost such a talented individual who had his whole life ahead of him.

It’s absolutely heartbreaking to realize we won’t get to see him perform again. He was incredibly talented, and I can’t believe he was taken away so young. He was an amazing actor and from what I’ve seen and heard an incredibly passionate, and dedicated person. He will be missed.
My thoughts and prayers are with Michelle and Matilda.

I saw the movie on Saturday. Heath’s performance was amazing. I’m so sad he is gone from this earth. In each performance I have to say his soul showed through….just beautiful. He was such a wonderful talent. My heart and prayers are with his family, especially his beautiful Daughter. He definitely deserves the Oscar for Best Actor.

It’s Rediculous that someone as special as heath died from something so stupid. I mean even i could say not to take that much meds together. And it was hard concentrating on “the dark knight” when you think about the tragedy. His acting in the movie was fabulous. In fact, He was the reason i saw it. And seeing his charector and how he pertrade it was pure genious. I’m very scared to see who they’ll get for the next movie. Someone has to and there’s a slim chance that someone can take his place let alone be better.

As much as i love heath i strongly disagree. With how big of a fan i am, can see where you coming from, but the writers of the movie kept everything as close to the comic as they could and one of those things was to keep the title the same (”The Dark Knight”).

Also, Just because heath died doesn’t mean he should get so much done for him. On the dvd they’re going to do more for him but it really was so last minute.

So i do understand. Not that i hate the idea, i do like it, but there are reasons why they didn’t do that. But in the end he did get something. He was a person and he probably had his funeral. but giving him the title is taking it too far.

I’m seeing the dark knight again tomorrow. His performance is just so incredibly amazing and inspiring. Watching him in that film was not only mindblowing, but it inspired me to pick up an old dream that I had given up on.

I only hope that his daughter will be inspired as well when she sees it and all his other remarkable performances.

Rest in peace Heath and god bless you and your family/friends. <3

To be perfectly honest I never really followed Heath’s carer. So I never knew whether or not I loved him. Sure he was great in Brokeback Mountain. I was upset when he died because he was so young. But I never knew… until I saw this movie. It was incredible. When the movie ended my heart was beating so fast and I had a lump in my throat. I wished he was still here to see how amazing he has done. I wish he was still here so I could now follow his carer. He was perfect, deep, haunting, comical. Genius. He has to win that Oscar. I don’t care if it’s unethical in any way. It’s right and he deserves it.

Heath Ledger ’s performance in Brokeback Mountain and The Dark Knight were not only justifyingly brilliant but mostly memoriable due the fact that he had short and successfull career in acting. He brought true emotional feelings to the film through Brokeback and Knight.
He definitely deserves an Oscar for his performance in the Dark Knight as the Joker. Absoultely mind-blowing from beginning to end in that film.
From fan who has watched your films I will be waiting for the award you must rightly deserve!

This movie was cursed. The joke was on him, unfortunately, for doing this role. Jack Nicholson even said he ‘warned him’. This was a bad joke. Play the joker (well enough) and you get played. Maybe superstitious? Maybe. Maybe not. What I do know now is that the stakes are getting too high in this acting biusness for some of these actors’ own good. Now, about Heath’s ‘performance’, in particular. What nobody has said yet is that Heath’s done for acting what Marlon brando did for it in the 1960’s. Marlon Brando took acting to another level by making it seem more natural and more real. At the time, acting technique was more ‘canned’ and had a more ’staged’ feeling to it. Ever since then, we’ve thought acting has been phenomenal, because actors had caught on and learned how to perform in that way- that Marlon Brando pioneered. Now… well, we are all in a mix here. We are still in the middle of a storm because of Heath Ledger and what he did with the Joker. People don’t realize it yet- maybe some of you do- but Heath did something that alot of people- I know I have- have been waiting for, for a long time: he took contempory, modern, great acting TO EVEN ANOTHER LEVEL. To some, he did the unthinkable. He revolutionized acting, again, in the same way that Brando did for and in his time. And he did it in a shorter amount of time. Most of it seems to be compressed into even a single role, that of the Joker. That’s the difference. Like the Denver post said, it would be a huge injustice if he didn’t recieve an Oscar for this last movie. Of course he will get it, though. Everybody just seems to know this already, and how funny. Already, and the movie hasn’t been out but for a week. What more can you say? acting has been revolutionized, reenergized and renewed forever. It will just be a matter of time before all other actors catch on.

I saw the Dark Knight for the second time tonight and it still amazes me how spectacular heath was as the joker. He really got into the jokers head and protrayed him very well. I never thought an actor could protray a character like heath did. He deserves a million oscars for how he acted in this movie. I just wish he could continue his acting to bigger and better things but he will never get a chance, but at least he gave us this unforgetable preformance. The first time i saw the movie i was so excited and never wanted it to end but when it did i cried because i knew it was heath’s last amazing preformance. I’ve always wanted to meet heath, he has been my favorite actor forever!! I will always miss him and he will always be my favorite actor, even though i will never get to meet him he will live on in his daughter and maybe one day i will be able to meet her and i will be able to meet a piece of him. I like how he plays ‘the joker’,adding abit of humour to it.

What a sad thing to see a man with his life ahead of him, and so much to live for die. I remember the news and media trying to snap photos as the paramedics whelled him into the ambulance. It was a sight that I will never forget. It was a sight that I wish I could forget. I was upset that people cared only to snap photos than to respect and mourn him. I wish I could’ve been just someone he knew, so that he didn’t feel like he needed prescription meds to help him sleep. I would’ve offered him my ear just to listen to his troubles. I think what could have possibly been troubling him??? Then I see him acting in that movie, and I feel that he put so much of his heart into it. I feel that maybe it was almost a good way for him to unleash any anger he was feeling due to his separation to his wife or to the break up of his home and family. I don’t know. I do know… that he is one of the best actors of our time. I know that the movie “The Dark Knight” was practically nothing without his performace. His character came to life, and was more than just a script or a joker smile. I think many people felt like me and were rooting for the villain more this time. If you never knew who he was I am sure this movie would’ve made you want to know who he was. It hurts to think that we will never see his face on the big screen again. For nights after seeing the news I was in disbelief, and now after seeing the movie at night I wake up in disbelief still. If it is hard for us as fans I can only imagine for his family and closest friends. I read all the comments fans have left here, and I feel better that I am not the only one feeling the loss. I am glad people remember him, and I am sure that to him that is recognition enough. I say it with conviction… Heath will win the Oscar. He deserves it, and it is known. I pray for his soul, and for his family. Rest in Peace Heath… :(

The first movie i saw with Heath Ledger was Candy, and i thought he stood out so much as in being such a great actor.I really started to get into his films with each one i was very impressed. But then the Dark Knight was released … i saw it and he was definatly the best performance i have ever seen in rele a long time. I still cant believe a guy with so much going for him .. is gone. He has a beautiful 2 yr. old daughter , this wonderful movie that woudl’ve have been his lift off onto being in huge movies and being even more known than he already was, his great looks and everything, he wouldve been on top right now!I was rele looking forward to more of his future films it’s wierd i have this feeling that he is just in the hospital and that he will be fine or that this is all a big joke just to stir up the media. I have cried over his death and what makes me rele sad is the fact that he or his loved ones will never know that i am crying over him that i am sad as well as them(and i speak for everyone who has shed a tear over this talented actor).

I just read this and thought it’s really nice that someone took the time to do it.
When he was alive, its sad to say i wasn’t a huge fan. I didn’t see enough of him, but his performance in brokeback mountain made me cry everytime and the beauty behind the role he played.
I was terribly in love with his character in 10 things i hate about you and i admire his character in the dark knight strongly.
I just wish, with all my heart he was here now, so instead of feeling sad and dissapointed everytime i see a film with him in, i want to feel “wow what next heath?”
It’s a modern day tragedy, i can only now hope he wins the oscar he deserves.
Keep up the good work with the website everyone.

    R.I.P Heath.
I miss your grin and awkwurd disposition off camera and your amazing performance on already

heath did SUCH an amazing job in this movie. i even forgot he was the joker throughout most of the movie, and that says something. he deserves an oscar and im gonna be so mad if he doesnt win it. and if he hadnt ODed, he couldve been a bigger actor than leo and brad combined. and i read on imdb.com that he said in an interview right before he died that the joker has been his favorite role yet. and i about cried right then and there:(

At first, I didn’t really like Heath’s work. That was until I saw him in `The Order/The Sin Eater` He showed me in this film that he really was an extremely gifted and talented actor but portraying such a realistic priest who has struggled with his faith. Since then, Heath Ledger showed that he could take on challenging roles such as his performance in Brokeback Mountain.

I recently went along to see him in The Dark Knight and I expected him to portray the Joker in a certain way. He did not do this, he failed in my expectations. This may seem a little harsh, but not so! he destroyed my vision and expectation and replaced them with something that was extra-ordinary. He transcended any known concept or idea of this character and forged a character so cruel and cunning that far surpassed any other portrayal including that of the great Jack Nicholson.

Anyone who can take a known concept and replace that with something original should be recognised by the Academy, and it is on this fact that he should be nominated and win in next years Oscar ceremony.

My thoughts and prayers go out to his family, his daughter Matilda, Michelle Williams and all of his friends.

By looking at how many people have written about their sorrow and loss including my own about the loss of Heath Ledger plainly shows how much he will be remembered and never be forgotten.

`Truth is Beauty, Beauty is Truth` Keats
His phrase was discussed by Heath’s character Alex in the film `The Others/The Sin Eater` and with this in mind, Heath’s acting, his life, his work was all so beautiful, so therefore it is a Truth to behold.

I just saw Dark Knight with my husband and LOVED IT! After reading Heath’s Bio I must say I found one thing I didn’t agree with. It states that the movie “CASANOVA” was disappointing! I have to totally disagree. If you haven’t seen it, SEE IT! It is hilarious and he just makes me laugh and laugh….He is an awesome actor and made the movie worth seeing. To me it was like mixing Princess Bride, Shakespear in Love and a little of Moulan Rouge all together. It was great!

I’m an old girl, and together with an even older friend we went to see Dark Knight today. What a movie! Heath’s performance was spine chilling, hardly believed it was him beneath the make up, that voice! Just sublime. Three things made that movie, Heath, Morgan Freeman and Michael Caine, who both supplied quiet dignity to an action packed fabulous movie! Sad that he left us so young. He would have gone on to great things.

I admired him so as an actor and even more so now. He shows his acting skill more than ever, in this film.
I only wish there could be more….

For the longest time I new him only as “That guy who played the night in A Nights Tale” but over time I have seen him for the truly astonishing actor he really is. I deeply hope that his family will be okay in time without him around and that the petition to have Heath Ledger nominated for an oscar is taken seriously and us as fans can provide a final service to an actor who spent his life serving and entertaining us to the end of his days.

    - i hate 2 luk at ur photo everytime i wake up (then again i hate it cuz’ i adore it!)
    - i hate that i think ’bout u at school (cuz’ i can’t even listen 1 word of wat the teacher says (which is gud)
    - i hate dat u make me cry every time i c ur beautiful face (includin’ on dark knight)
    - i hate u 4 dying the day just b4 my b-day
    - i hate u for leaving without saying gudbye (not only me, but the world 2, including’ ur beautiful daughter). Strange how she luks lik u! I know that she’ll b very pretty when she grows up, cuz’ she’s following ur footsteps… ‘every gud luking guy leaves a trace’.

“His childhood was long, and he adored it; his love was pure, he enjoyed it; he tried to succeed, and he made it; his name’s calling for Oscars, he’ll win it; he got trouble, he’s gone, so face it; his life was short, but he lived it; his memories were sweet, he cherished it; he’s the best, accept it! But if u don’t… then BEAT IT!”

Its like he was born yesterday morning, grew up in Australia, participated in movies/theaters; in the afternoon, he appeared on Brokeback Mountain (which made him a best actor); & 2day mornin’, he marries his co-star Michelle, had a beautiful daughter Matilda, got into a divorce & this afternoon, he appears on the best movie, dark knight (which ‘will’ make him gain an Oscars nomination)… but suddenly: he disappears. Without no1 knowing where he went… “its like he left the world, without saying goodbye…”

4get that he was born; 4get that he was charming; 4get that he had gone away; 4get that he existed… but always remember that he made Hollywood rise again!

Its so hard to believe that its almost a year ago now since Heath passed away.

Heath was an amazing person, in every aspect of the word.

    He was an incredible actor.

I’m proud to call myself a Heath Ledger fan. I have been a fan since the first time I watched The Patriot.

I seen the petition here to get Heath an Oscar.

Well, no offence to the people who made it, but I didn’t sign it.
In my opinion, there’s no need to sign it. If he’s nominated and wins, he’s won it all on his own for his amazing acting.

In my opinion, Heath deserves the Oscar. If the people in the Academy overlook his performance in the Dark Knight, that will be disappointing. I’m no expert, but I believe this man deserves it!!

Heath, You’ve made your family, friends and fans so proud of you.

I totally agree with you. In my opinion, he is one of the most natural talented actor nowadays. However, I strongly believe that it’s more important how you live your life, not how long you live. I suppose, Heath was a bohemian who enjoyed life in different aspects and remain a great heritage.

    Dear Heath,
I have been exceptionally inspired by you. Not only because of your films but also for who you are. You inspire me to do better and to give it my all. You gave me a reason to live my life. I am so sorry that your life had to end in such a short time and i know that if you were still on earth you could achieve so much more. At least you gave life your all and i admire you so much. i know that in life you did not sleep very well so i hope that in heaven you’re sleeping peacefully and soundly. We all miss you very dearly and will never forget about you. You will be forever cherished.
Thank-you for making me a better person and I will still love you.
you will be missed deeply and never forget that we will all still love you.

I keep watching the Dark Knight when it comes on and it is all because of Heath and the role he plays. He manages to evoke such sympathy. Of course the script is fantastic, in Batman tradition, but Ledger takes the Joker to a level that no one will forget.

Thank you Heath for giving so much to us in the short time you were here. We miss you!
